Dido Elizabeth Belle Lindsay was born in 1761, the daughter of Captain Sir John Lindsay, a British Royal Navy officer, and Maria Belle, an African slave. After her mother’s death, Dido was taken from the West Indies by Captain Lindsay and entrusted to his uncle, Chief Justice William Murray and his wife Elizabeth. They raised Dido at Kenwood House in Hampstead with their great-niece Lady Elizabeth Murray.

As Dido and Elizabeth grew up, the Mansfields commissioned portraits of the two cousins. However, Dido worried that she would be viewed as a subordinate because of her mixed race. Dido’s father died, leaving her a large inheritance, while Elizabeth would receive nothing from her father’s new wife and stepbrothers.

Lord and Lady Mansfield believed that no gentleman would marry Dido because of her mixed race. They decided not to formally admit her into society and asked her to take on the role of housekeeper rather than marry someone beneath her status. In 1783, Lord Mansfield presided over the case of Gregson v Gilbert, which involved insurance claims related to the Zong Massacre, in which slaves were thrown overboard from a slave ship. Dido assisted her uncle, secretly corresponding with John to support the abolitionist cause. However, this led to a disagreement between Lord Mansfield and John, which resulted in John’s dismissal.

Dido’s aunts Lady Mansfield and Lady Mary Murray tried to arrange a marriage between Dido and Oliver Ashford, but Oliver Ashford’s family had ulterior motives. Oliver’s paranoid brother James Ashford initially pursued Elizabeth but ended his courtship after learning she had no inheritance. Oliver proposes to Dido and she accepts, but she continues to meet John secretly. James confronts Dido, insulting and harassing her.
