Mortal Kombat 1 is a fighting video game released on September 19, 2023. It is produced by NetherRealm Studios and published by Warner Bros. Games. The game is the twelfth main game in the “Mortal Kombat” series. It is both a reboot and sequel to the previous game “Mortal Kombat 11”.
The story takes place in a new timeline where Liu Kang, known as Fire God Liu Kang, gathers a group of warriors to compete in Outworld’s Mortal Kombat Tournament. However, they face a challenge from two men trained by Shang Tsung. The game received mostly positive reviews from critics, but the Nintendo Switch version received some criticism for its graphical and technical issues.

Mortal Kombat 1 gameplay
In Mortal Kombat 1, the gameplay offers a variety of exciting features. Players can enjoy story mode, play online with others using rollback netcode, and engage in offline battles. An interesting addition are the Kameo Fighters, who help out in combat, kind of like the tag-assist fighters in the previous game, Mortal Kombat 11.
These characters are separate from the main roster and can be selected before each battle. They provide two types of aid: summons, which are used when the player remains in one place, and ambush, which can be performed regardless of the player’s actions.
These Cameo warriors can even perform deadly and cruel deeds of their own. Additionally, Kameo Fighter selection affects the player’s health during combat. The “critical strikes” introduced in Mortal Kombat 11 are back with a twist, as they are now a collaborative move between the player and their chosen Kameo Fighter when the player’s health drops below 30%.
The game also features an Air Kombat combo system and offers a variety of single and multiplayer modes, including a story-driven mode, Tower mode, and a unique Invasion mode that combines combat with board game and role-playing elements. This invasion mode presents challenges to earn rewards such as skins, in-game currency, and concept art. Players can also participate in local matches, online tournaments, and host tournaments with specific rules in multiplayer mode.
Mortal Kombat 1 plot
The plot of Mortal Kombat 1 revolves around the consequences of defeating Kronika and Shang Tsung. Fire god Liu Kang used Kronika’s hourglass to take control of the universe, but entrusted it to Geras, making him the protector of the Earth realm.
Over time, he formed an alliance with Outworld to continue hosting the Mortal Kombat tournament. Meanwhile, the now powerless Shang Tsung encounters a mysterious figure named “Damasi” who reveals hidden powers. Liu Kang recruited fighters such as Kung Lao, Raiden, Johnny Cage, and Kenshi to participate in the new tournament, with Raiden becoming the champion of Earthrealm.
As the story unfolds, Shang Tsung’s return to power and his alliance with the alien queen Sindel leads to a series of events involving Tarkatans, soul-stealing devices, and the revelation of alternate timelines. The story ends with an epic battle in which a rogue timeline is wiped out and Liu Kang is prepared for future conflicts, setting the stage for potential new challenges.
In a post-credits scene, the alternate timeline’s warriors plan to embark on a longer battle. The story also includes separate “Invasion” and “Season of Ghosts” storylines, introducing interesting twists and connections within the Mortal Kombat universe.
