Starfield Ship Building Guide, How to Build a Ship Starfield?

About Starry Sky Games

“Starfield” is an action role-playing game produced by Bethesda Game Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks. The game was revealed during Bethesda’s E3 presentation in 2018. The game is set in space and marks Bethesda’s first new intellectual property in nearly three decades.

The game will be released on September 6, 2023 on Windows and Xbox Series X/S. Critics’ reviews were mostly positive, highlighting its open-ended gameplay, combat, visuals, music, and improved technical performance compared to previous Bethesda games. However, reception to its story and exploration aspects was mixed.

Starship Building Guide

In Starfield, players have the opportunity to create or customize their own ship. Bethesda heavily promoted this feature ahead of the game’s release. However, the shipbuilding system in the game is not well explained and requires players to figure it out on their own.

In order to provide valuable shipbuilding tips, this guide collects insights from multiple playthroughs in an effort to make the process smoother and more enjoyable for all players.

In Starfield, building a ship requires owning at least one ship, which you usually get early in the game. You can’t build a ship completely from scratch; you need a base ship. To begin the boat building process, find a Boat Service Technician and select the “I want to view and modify my boat” option. Then, select the boat builder from the lower right corner of the screen. This will take you to a screen where you can add, move, delete, and adjust various ship components.

If you want to build a boat completely from scratch, you can delete every component of the boat you’re looking at, essentially starting with a blank canvas. The good news is that you’ll get points for the parts you remove, allowing you to build a new ship for free until it’s worth more than the original base ship.

The shipbuilding screen in Starfield has some key components that need to be understood. When you zoom out, you’ll see the canvas you can work on the boat, and it must fit within these boundaries. The grid on the canvas shows the length and width of the ship in meters, with labels Fore, STBD (starboard), Aft and Port, representing the four sides of the ship. It’s crucial to match the parts you choose with the side you want to attach them to; for example, you can’t add parts for the forward port to the starboard aft.

Look at the readout at the bottom and upper left corner of the Shipyard screen. Red numbers represent suboptimal values, while blue numbers represent optimal values. This information may seem overwhelming, but it will make more sense as you continue. A

Also, on the right side, near the bottom, you’ll find false readings. If you build a boat from scratch, you’re going to start with a blank canvas with eight mistakes. You can click the “Flight Check” button at the bottom for more details about errors and warnings. Your goal is zero errors, but warnings are acceptable.

Finally, there is a ruler on the right side of the screen with two buttons, one at the bottom and one at the top. Once you’ve selected a shipping part, you can use these buttons to move the part up or down and help you snap it into place if you have trouble placing it.

Select ship parts

To start building your ship on a blank canvas, click the Add option at the bottom. This will display a list of available boat parts provided by your boat service technician. Some sections may appear gray, indicating that you are unable to obtain them due to a lack of required skills. Hover your cursor over the gray section to see which skill you need.

Another important aspect to consider when choosing boat parts is its category. Components are divided into three categories: Class A, Class B and Class C components. Some parts have no category name, meaning they can be used with any of the three categories. By default, you become an A-class pilot, allowing you to build and fly A-class ships. Note that you cannot install modules beyond your reactor level. For example, if you have a Class A reactor, you cannot use a Class B engine.

Regardless of your ship’s design, it must include the following components:

  • cockpit
  • Roustabout
  • engine)
  • grave avenue
  • landing bay
  • reactor
  • tank
  • landing gear

While it is recommended to have cargo holds, shields, and weapons on your ship, you can choose to skip them if you wish.

When building a ship in Starfield, it’s best to start with the cockpit, establishing the front of the ship and setting its overall aesthetic. Then, add HABs to define the basic length, width, and shape of the ship. Once you have the structure in mind, combine the engines, gravity drives, and reactors. Typically, shields and weapons are added last unless you focus on cosmetics.

Once the foundation of the ship has been laid, the next step is to iron out any mistakes while achieving the desired look and functionality. For example, if your boat ends up being very large, you may need to install multiple engines to generate enough power to move it.

Also, consider your cargo capacity and add more as needed. You can also include screened cargo holds for smuggling contraband. When adding weapons, you may encounter errors and warnings related to weapon assignments. Navigate to the Weapons tab in the Flight Check menu and assign the weapon to your controls and keybindings.

When everything is ready, a blue readout will appear in the lower right corner of the screen indicating that you have cleared all errors and warnings and your ship should be operating as expected. Keep in mind that if certain parameters (such as mobility and mass) appear in red, the reading is still there.

Red means there is a problem, white means acceptable, and blue means very good. Once your ship is up to par and meets your expectations, you can change its color by hovering over any component and selecting the color setting at the bottom, or modify the ship’s name in the Flight Check menu. Now that your ship is built, exit the shipyard and your ship will be ready for exploration and adventure.
